Understanding Tantramar as a municipality

Tantramar is a unified municipality formed through the coming together of several historic communities, rural areas, and a thriving university town. On January 1st, 2023, the Town of Sackville, Village of Dorchester, and the Sackville, Dorchester, and Pointe de Bute Local Service Districts were amalgamated to create the new entity of Tantramar. This change was part of New Brunswick’s local governance reform, aimed at strengthening regional cooperation, streamlining services, and enhancing local decision-making while preserving the unique identities of the communities that make it up.

As a municipal entity, Tantramar is responsible for providing essential services to its residents, including infrastructure maintenance, emergency services, community planning, and recreational programming. The municipality operates with a mayor and council structure, ensuring that local voices continue to shape the region’s future. With a focus on sustainable development and community well-being, Tantramar’s leadership works to balance growth with the preservation of its rich natural and cultural heritage.

By bringing together the strengths of its diverse communities, Tantramar benefits from a more coordinated approach to governance. The municipality fosters collaboration between its rural and urban areas, enhances economic opportunities, and ensures that residents have access to the services and amenities they need. Understanding Tantramar as a municipality means appreciating both its shared vision for the future and the deep local pride of the communities that call it home.
