The Municipality of Tantramar is committed to fostering a resilient, sustainable community that proactively addresses the challenges of climate change. Through collaborative efforts, strategic planning, and community engagement, we aim to reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainable practices for current and future generations.

Our commitment to climate action

Tantramar has undertaken several initiatives to mitigate climate change and enhance sustainability:

  • Climate Change Adaptation Planning: In 2016, the Town of Sackville released a Corporate Climate Change Adaptation Plan to understand and address projected climate impacts, including changing precipitation patterns, sea-level rise, and intensifying storms.
  • Sustainable Sackville Plan: Developed with input from over 750 community members, this plan outlines strategies for creating a more sustainable and livable community.
  • Tantramar 2040 Initiative: A regional sustainability plan focusing on environmental, economic, and social/cultural challenges and opportunities, developed in collaboration with neighbouring communities.

Tantramar Climate Change Advisory Committee

To guide and strengthen our sustainability efforts, the Municipality established the Climate Change Advisory Committee, a citizen-led group that advises Council and staff on local climate action. This dedicated committee plays a key role in shaping municipal policy, fostering partnerships, and helping the community respond to climate-related risks with informed, practical solutions. Their work includes reviewing strategic documents, recommending adaptation measures, and supporting public engagement on sustainability issues.

Community partnerships

Collaboration is key to our sustainability efforts. We work closely with organizations such as EOS Eco-Energy, which has led projects like the Tantramar-Strait Shores HealthADAPT initiative, focusing on community-based data to assess climate change vulnerabilities and identify adaptation actions.

Additionally, the Mayor’s Roundtable on Climate Change provides advice and guidance to the municipality on improving efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change, designing long-term structures to sustain these efforts.

Infrastructure and innovation

Tantramar is investing in infrastructure to support sustainability:

  • Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations: The town has installed new EV chargers to encourage the use of electric vehicles, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Green Roof Initiatives: Promoting green roofs in the region to improve freshwater management and increase climate resilience.
