Baseball dominated the Sackville sports scene following the Second World War but no team captured the imagination of fans like the Juvenile Legionnaires. Lansdowne Street was lined with vehicles and fans crowded along the slope to watch the fireballing of young Steve Johnson, the hitting of Dunc Wheeler, Bob Hicks and Conrad Phinney and the fielding of players like Alan Milner, Fred Melanson, Bud Robertson and Bill Godfrey and the leadership of those like the late Clyde Keith and Frank Lewis. The Juvenile responded to this support, giving Sackville its first New Brunswick championship in 1948. They accomplished this by defeating a strong team from St. Stephen — the very heart of baseball in the Maritimes.
