Fire Prevention By-Law Review and Update
The Municipality of Tantramar is acknowledging recent community feedback regarding the proposed Fire Prevention By-Law. Residents have expressed thoughtful questions about how updated regulations may influence day-to-day activities. Tantramar recognizes the importance of providing clear information as the process moves forward.
It is important to clarify that the by-law under review is not new. A similar by-law has been in place for many years within the former Sackville boundaries. The current process aims to extend that same framework across the full municipality to ensure consistency and public safety. The review of this by-law commenced in late 2025, following staff’s presentation to Council of a prioritized list of by-laws slated for review.
The proposed by-law does not prohibit residents from having small recreational fires. Instead, it establishes clear parameters to ensure that open burning is conducted safely and responsibly. These guidelines are intended to reduce the risk of wildfires, property damage, and safety hazards, while still allowing residents to enjoy activities such as campfires.
We have heard the concerns raised by residents, particularly those in more rural areas of Tantramar. An updated version of the proposed by-law, reflecting feedback received to date, is scheduled to be presented at an upcoming Council meeting.
To clarify the legislative process to date, the by-law has only received First Reading in name, which allows it to be brought forward for public review and discussion. It has not received Second or Third Reading, and no final decision has been made. Community input continues to play a central role in the process.
For the most up-to-date and accurate information, residents are encouraged to review Council reports and meeting materials available on the municipal website. These documents provide detailed background, updates, and the exact wording currently under consideration by Council.
