    Council Highlights from Regular Council Meeting of June 9, 2026

    From new committee appointments to a newly elected deputy mayor, highlights from the June 9 regular council meeting are captured below. Links to the full proceedings are provided at the beginning and end of this document.

    Section 4: Public and Administrative Presentations

    Council heard presentations from the following community groups and/or members:

    • Mount Allison ringette team, Emma Jackson and Rachel MacLean (begins at 4:03)

    Section 5: Reports and recommendations from committees and private meetings

    5.1, Appointment to committees: The motion to appoint eight council members to Tantramar standing committees was carried. Councillor appointments are as follows:

    • Councillor Alyssa Greene has been appointed to the Business Improvement Area Committee, which operates under the New Brunswick BIA act. Member businesses within the set zone pay fees to support downtown-area projects, which the BIA uses to support, strengthen and advocate for Sackville’s downtown district.
    • Councillor Haidee Robertson has been appointed to the Rural Health Action Group, which is a group of local volunteers focused on recruiting and retaining doctors, various levels of nurses, and allied health workers to Tantramar.
    • Deputy Mayor Josh Goguen has been appointed to the Climate Change Advisory Committee, a citizen-led group that advises Council and staff on local climate action, helps inform municipal policy and partnerships, and helps inform community responses to climate-related risks.
    • Councillor Kristen LeBlanc has been appointed to the Waterfowl Park Advisory Committee, which serves as an advisory board for municipal activities and infrastructure that exists in the park, as well as its overall management. 
    • Councillor Barry Hicks has been appointed to the Sports Wall of Fame Committee, which honours Tantramar athletes, coaches, managers and builders, and reviews nominations for wall of fame inductions. 
    • Councillor Tori Weldon has been appointed to the Arts Wall of Fame Committee, which honours Tantramar artists who have attained international, national or regional prominence and distinction in literary, performing, and visual arts. It also honours others who’ve been instrumental in the cultural and artistic development within the community. 
    • Councillor Allison Butcher has been appointed to the Sackville Library Board, which supports the delivery of library programs and services, as defined by the New Brunswick Public Libraries Act.
    • Councillor Wayne Wells has been appointed to of the Dorchester Library Board, which supports the delivery of library programs and services, as defined by the New Brunswick Public Libraries Act.

    Section 6: Reports from Administration

    • 6.1, Summer meeting schedule: The motion to cancel a July Committee of the Whole meeting and an August Regular Council Meeting was carried. This will allow Council and staff time for summer holidays. If a municipal matter requiring Council attention were to arise during this break, a special meeting would be called. Council meetings resume on August 24 with the Committee of the Whole. 
    • 6.3, Tree planting grant signing authority: The motion to grant Mayor and Clerk signing authority for the Growing Canada’s Community Canopies Grant was carried. This decision followed a presentation from Jamie Ferguson, Manager of Active Living and Culture, which reviewed Tantramar’s upcoming tree planting program. This will draw from grant funds and plant hundreds of trees across urban and rural areas of Tantramar over the grant’s three-year term.

    Section 11: Deputy Mayor Election

    • Election results: Ward 3 Councillor Josh Goguen has been elected as Tantramar’s new Deputy Mayor. In the absence of the Mayor, Deputy Mayor Goguen will act in the place of place of the Mayor.

    6.2: The motion to authorize additional student By-Law Officers to enforce By-Laws for Tantramar, presented to Mayor and Council by Michael Beal, Director of Financial Services, was carried.

    6.4: The motion on approving the trailer trade-in and purchase of a tilt deck trailer, presented to Mayor and Council by Jon Eppel, Director of Engineering and Public Works, was carried.
