While Tantramar’s parks, trails, and nature preserves are among the best in the world, the Sackville Waterfowl Park is our crown jewel. This award-winning, 55-acre wetland sanctuary is just minutes from the highway and a short walk from downtown, offering an immersive nature experience that’s both accessible and unforgettable.
The park features 3.5 kilometres of accessible trails and boardwalks, including a section of the Trans-Canada Trail, winding through marshes, ponds, and meadows. It’s home to an astonishing 160 bird species, with 26 confirmed breeding species, as well as 200 species of plants, making it a paradise for birdwatchers, photographers, and nature lovers. Interpretive signage and a self-guided tour map help visitors learn about the park’s diverse ecosystem, while free admission ensures everyone can enjoy this natural treasure.
For a deeper exploration, visitors can join the Waterfowl Park Guided Tour (available May to August). This 1.5-hour accessible walking tour includes binoculars, hands-on activities, and a locally-made snack. Along the way, participants will discover the rich history of Tantramar, including the stories of the Mi’kmaq and Acadian settlements, the Acadian dyking system, our region’s agricultural heritage, and the innovative methods used to restore marshland habitats for wildlife.
