The New Brunswick Age-Friendly Community Recognition Program is a way of encouraging communities and municipalities across the province to create policies, services and structures that promote healthy aging and wellness.
The Age Friendly Community Movement encourages healthy aging and wellness under the following eight areas:
- Outdoor spaces and buildings
- Transportation
- Housing
- Social participation
- Respect and social inclusion
- Civic participation and employment
- Communication and information
- Community support and health services
By setting up policies, services and structures that support healthy aging and wellbeing, communities can help people to live in secure, healthy environments.
Council approved a motion (RFD 2026-002) at the February 10, 2026 meeting to support Tantramar's application to become an Age Friendly Community in New Brunswick.
The Age Friendly Community Working Group has been meeting to get the initiative off the ground. Planning is underway to develop community engagement sessions to help guide the development of the Needs Assessment.
The Working Group consists of members from the following:
- Citizens-at-large
- Rural Health Action Group
- Nursing Home Without Walls
- Horizon Health Network
- Vitalité Health Network
- Alzheimer Society of NB
- Mount Allison University
- Municipality of Tantramar
