In response to the growing climate crisis, the Mayor’s Roundtable on Climate Change was established as a pilot project by Sackville Town Council following local climate strike events in 2019. This group, consisting of experts from various fields, was tasked with advising the Town on how to address climate change through both mitigation and adaptation efforts. The Roundtable’s goal was to help design long-term structures that would sustain these efforts within the community.
Key actions and outcomes
The Roundtable took several key actions during its existence, starting with reviewing the Town’s 2020 Capital Budget. A small group of members provided climate-focused recommendations on planned projects, marking the first time the Town’s budget was evaluated through a climate change lens. Additionally, the Roundtable hosted a Public Forum in February 2020, which invited community members to share ideas and suggestions on how Sackville could take action to mitigate and adapt to climate change. This event served as a platform for diverse perspectives and helped generate valuable input for the Town’s climate strategy.
Moving forward
After the forum, the Roundtable reviewed the ideas and recommendations gathered, with plans to provide Town Council with a summary and actionable recommendations. The work of the Roundtable helped lay the groundwork for future climate action in the community, and its insights continue to inform Tantramar’s ongoing efforts to address the climate crisis.
